Beth Ashton
Integrating the Gospel into your homeschool (A mentor mom© class)
Beth Ashton's bio
After falling asleep reading the story of the 2,000 stripling warriors to your two youngest kids, you startle awake as your scriptures hit the floor. In the darkness, you quietly pull your crumpled body from your son’s stiff twin bed and softly leave their room, managing to escape the noisy toys from the full day’s play. As you brush your teeth and prepare the last minute things before bed, one question penetrates your mind and your heart. “Do my children know?” you inquire. Could they say as did Helaman’s sons did, “We do not doubt our mothers knew it?” With the busyness of life, sometimes the things that mean the most to us slip down between the cracks. Learn how to gauge your success and learn some real, workable ways to implement Gospel learning into your everyday life. In this 30-minute class, Beth will share some of her basic techniques and elaborate on ideas for integrating the Gospel into your homeschool lifestyle. Come and learn how focusing on your learning and your behavior will inspire your children to “obey and observe to perform every word of command with exactness” (Alma 57:21).

Jessica Diviney
In Defiance of Dewey: Memorization and Recitation for Today’s Child (a mentor mom© class)
Jessica Diviney's bio
Though they were the foundation of classical education for centuries, memorization and recitation have gone sadly out of style. The twentieth century has witnessed the rather frightening move in American education farther and farther away from employing these time-tested means of acquiring knowledge toward a more “progressive,” experiential model. However, there are numerous reasons to support the theory that memorization and recitation are invaluable not only to the cultural education we seek for our children but also to proper neurological development. Learn why memorization is extremely worthwhile, as well as techniques to help your children memorize. Whether it’s the Gettysburg Address or Shakespeare, the date William the Conqueror won the Battle of Hastings or a list of all the prepositions in the English language, the American Presidents, geography facts, or Latin prayers, there are things worth knowing by heart—and it can be easy to do.

Julie Finlayson
Poetry in Motion (A mentor Mom© class)
Julie Finlayson's bio
Poetry... It's been described as "the lava of the imagination," "idiosyncratic as the spider's delicate web," and "just the evidence of life." Sounds pretty important, right? Misty Foxley
The "why" of Homeschooling - Homeschool beginner's seminar
Misty Foxley's bio
Seventeen years ago my husband and I had an initial reason for taking, what seemed to us at the time, "a drastic measure" in bringing our first child home for his education. Looking back, we realize it was one of the finest decisions we ever made, not only for our children, but for ourselves. Yet, the initial reason for taking that first step has long ago faded and is now only a small part of why we continue to homeschool. I want to share with you the progessive understanding that came gradually and naturally as, together, my husband and I dedicated ourselves to teaching and inspiring our children. The fruits of our labors are becoming increasingly evident to us and our grown children, and the reasons now are clear and unmistakable. I'll also share with you what I've seen in other families who have chosen this same path, and how each family is blessed by this choice, according to their desire, faith, and willingness to do the best they can.
Wednesday 12:20 - 1:00 pm
Hold the Course (a Mentor Mom© class)
Misty Foxley's bio
We must think in terms of IDEALS because we are Women of Covenant - and we know we live in critical times and have a great work to do. We envision our success, and we are willing to be magnified by the Lord in all things. But every single day we cannot deny the dozens of ways that we see ourselves fall short of this ideal. It's easy, at times, to believe that no matter how hard (or fast) we work, we just aren't getting it "right." To make matters worse, we see and hear of other families succeeding and we begin to wonder if we are capable of doing the same. This is the great challenge of any person's mission in life, to continue forward even in times of great discouragement. Misty has struggled over the years with those feelings of failure and discouragement, but she has learned how to hold the course, and do so with a sense of hope and trust. Misty will share with you specific ways of dealing with the gap between the ideal homeschool and the reality of our lives.

Jennifer Georgia
"Fun Math" – Loving Math with Your Young Child (a Mentor Mom© class)
Jennifer Georgia's bio
Numbers are symbols for quantitative reality, but the ability to think abstractly doesn’t usually develop until around age eight. Memorizing math facts is not the same as understanding what they mean, and limiting your child to arithmetic in the early grades does nothing to help him develop curiosity about math. Discover how to introduce your child to math in fun ways that lay a solid foundation for mathematical competency and increase his sense of wonder.
Thursday 1:30 - 2:00 pm
"Cool Math" – Loving Math with Your Older Child (A Mentor Mom© class)
Jennifer Georgia's bio
Educators increasingly recognize the importance of helping children build their "number sense" and "operation sense," focusing on understanding concepts rather than just memorizing a series of steps. An eclectic choice of topics drawn from recreational math, the history of math, and elsewhere can provide a rich source for increasing understanding of what math is while helping your child view himself as a "great mathematician."

The "How" of Homeschooling: Motivation, parenting and other issues - Homeschool Beginner's Seminar

President Hinckley stated, "Most of us tend to be inherently lazy. [But] nothing of real substance comes without work." So how do we get our children to put forth the effort to educate themselves without turning into "Sergeant Mom"? All learning is self-learning, and desire is the best motivator. But there are things we can do to help awaken the desire to learn, and put our children on the path to attaining a quality education.

Reclaiming Science for God
Rebecca Keller's bio
For most of the 20th century, science has been dominated by the philosophy of Naturalism, which is so entrenched in scientific thinking that the possibility of a real and personal God has all but vanished from the worldview of most modern scientists. But has science really revealed a world created by chance and driven by unguided random changes? Does the current body of scientific knowledge really point away from a divine Creator? In this seminar Dr. Keller will discuss how the average Christian can understand the results and implications generated by scientific studies over that last 30 years, how this information can testify of the Gospel in the marketplace of ideas, and demonstrate how the next generation of Christian kids can reclaim science for God.

Stepping Stones Towards High School and College Level Science

What foundational materials does your child really need to know to excel in upper level science courses? How can your students deal with the claims of the evolutionary worldview they will encounter from their public school counterparts, in college, in the media, and in daily life? Even more, how can you equip your child to challenge the secular culture using a solid scientific background as an ally? Dr. Keller will show you how to impart vital building blocks for science in the elementary and mid-school grades in order for your child to have a firm grasp of scientific knowledge that is broader than the traditional approach to elementary science education. By building a solid foundation in the three core foundational subjects of chemistry, biology, and physics, upper level science classes will be more enjoyable as students confidently reach the next level in their education.

Kelli Poll
At the Foot of the Giant
Kelli Poll's bio
A liberal arts education expands our vision and empowers us to see farther than we can on our own. Isaac Newton stated that if he had seen farther than other men it was because he had stood on the shoulders of giants. By studying the great works of the past we climb to those shoulders and enlarge our perspectives. But have you ever felt like you lacked the tools and the strength to even start that climb? Have you ever felt intimidated as you stood at the foot and looked up to a shoulder that seems miles away from where you are? If so, how will you ever get yourself up there, much less inspire your children to tackle the task? This class will present the steps for team climbing, to impact your own and your children’s education. This is "You With Them:" the views are breathtaking, come along!

The four deadly Errors of Teaching Writing
Andrew Pudewa's bio
We’ve all suffered it at one time or another: Frustration about writing assignments. Either on the receiving end, or perhaps now on the giving end, there can be a few distinctly discouraging aspects to teaching and being taught writing. The tough questions include: What to correct and how to give a grade? How much help is too much? Isn’t the assignment clear enough? Why don’t students find their own errors? Learn and avoid four teaching mistakes that contribute to this frustration: Overcorrecting, Holding Back Help, Unclear Assignments, & Over-Expectation.

History and modern research show very clearly how good writers have developed. What are the two most critical things you can do as a parent to develop a high level of aptitude, from a young age and into high school? With humor and insight, Andrew will share the two easy but unbelievably powerful things you can do to build language patterns and nurture competent communicators in your family.

Andrew Pudewa's bio
Escaping the "conveyor belt" approach of institutional education by which most of us were shaped isn't easy, but it has to be done. For many parents, our greatest handicap as teachers is our own education—but it need not be so. Find out in this workshop how spelling information is most efficiently stored in the brain, and why. With a greater insight into the nature of spelling and neurological function presented in this workshop, the parent/teacher will be well-equipped to meet the needs of all their children, not just the “naturally” good spellers.

Teaching Boys and other children who would rather make forts all day
Andrew Pudewa's bio
Children like to do what they can do; they want to do what they think they can do, and they hate to do what they think they cannot do. If you want excited and enthusiastic children who learn well, you must understand these key laws of motivation, and focus on the essential requirement of relevancy. If it matters, children will learn it, and if it doesn’t, they won’t. This session will enlighten you with specific ways to find and create relevancy for children, even when they have no apparent interest.

Worldviews
Liz Quist's bio
There is no knowledge, no light, no wisdom that you are in possession of, but what you have received it from some source. - Brigham Young It's almost impossible to see a time period clearly while living in it. Join Liz Quist in an audacious attempt do just that! The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints connects us to the most vital sources for finding true knowledge, light and wisdom. What are the great sources of knowledge, true or false, teaching those in the world in our day? How can we help to lead others to greater truth? How can we increase our effectiveness in helping the Lord bring to light the things of darkness? Worldviews are made up of the sets of beliefs generally subscribed to by a society. Whether you were a Roman in A.D. 125, a Muslim in the 8th century or a Christian today, the way the elite in a specific time period answer major life questions (i.e. How do we find truth? How will the world end? Does God exist?) informs almost every aspect of society, culture and what we call "reality". It is almost impossible for us to see our own day with clarity, which makes the study of the current worldview controversial and speculative - but also interesting! Join Liz for a whirlwind 1 hr introduction to worldviews with suggestions for further reading.

Katie Wilson
Introducing Literary Criticism (Or “Book Clubs: the Next Level!”) (a mentor mom© class)
Katie Wilson's bio
Nothing kills a child’s love of reading faster than having to “dissect” and analyze every book they read; however, we know that we eventually need to cover the finer points of literary criticism. So, how do we teach literary analysis without turning it into a mind-numbing and tedious process? That’s easy: use your child’s book group discussions to painlessly introduce terms like plot, theme, and conflict. In this class, Katie will show you how to teach your children more sophisticated ways of talking about literature, hidden in the guise of fun and easy book group discussions! She’ll also give suggestions for books that readily lend themselves to discussions of basic literary terms. (Don’t already have a kid’s book group going? No worries—just check out Katie’s article on “Starting Your Kids Book Group: Tips for Success!”)

Art Appreciation- Why in the world would I study that?? (A Mentor Mom© Class)
Dana Wood's bio
It’s easy to get bogged down in the 3 R’s with homeschooling and never find the time to study things like art and music. But we have a spark of the divine in each of us and that spark includes the need to create. One of the best ways to encourage our children to use and develop their talent to create is to teach them to appreciate the things in the world that have already been created. In this class, Dana demonstrates not only the reasons for teaching art appreciation, but easy ways to incorporate it in elementary, middle and high school - as well as the resources you’ll need to accomplish it. You don’t have to be an art major to teach your children the fine arts!

Curriculum Conundrums
We've all experienced it... the confusion that comes from picking a new curriculum. You may be just starting out with a subject or perhaps the curriculum you have been using just isn't working. Either way, it's definitely challenging and choosing by "trial-and-error" is expensive! Reading reviews and polling your friends can be helpful, but what most of us really want is a chance to LOOK at the books, HANDLE the materials, BROWSE through the lessons and ASK QUESTIONS of someone who actually USES it! Come to our "Curriculum Conundrum" classes and take some of the mystery out of the curriculum choosing process!
Grammar
"To shift the structure of a sentence alters the meaning of that sentence, as definitely and inflexibly as the position of a camera alters the meaning of the object photographed...The arrangement of the words matters, and the arrangement you want can be found in the picture in your mind...The picture tells you how to arrange the words and the arrangement of the words tells you, or tells me, what's going on in the picture." Joan Didion
